A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE KOSCIUSKO HIGH SCHOOL BAND ON THEIR PERFORMANCE IN THE TOYOTA GATOR BOWL ON JANUARY 1, 1999, IN JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.

WHEREAS, the Kosciusko High School "Big Red" Marching Band performed in the Toyota Gator Bowl on January 1, 1999, in Jacksonville, Florida; and

WHEREAS, having never performed in such a grand endeavor, "Big Red" was given the opportunity to exhibit their individual talents with the award winning Field Show, and through participation in the Gator Bowl Parade and the Gator Bowl Half-Time Show; and

WHEREAS, competing against bands from Oregon, Wyoming, Minnesota, Michigan, North Carolina, New York, Alabama, Pennsylvania, Idaho, Missouri, Maryland, Virginia, Indiana and New Jersey, the "Big Red" Marching Band was named the Overall Champion in the Field Show and the Parade Competition; and

WHEREAS, the "Big Red" Marching Band, which consists of 108 students, was awarded the highest award, the Sweepstakes Award, which names the best band in the overall competition; and

WHEREAS, winning the Sweepstakes Award, the "Big Red" Marching Band was asked to perform a portion of its half-time show during the pregame ceremonies at the Toyota Gator Bowl and participate in the massed band half-time show, which was performed by 3,000 high school band students and nationally televised on NBC; and

WHEREAS, the Kosciusko High School "Big Red" Marching Band has been superbly directed and inspired by the band staff, which consists of Kevin Bishop, Sherry Dean, David Lance and Mickey Mangum, who have broadened the band members' knowledge of the music and refined their skills in execution; and

WHEREAS, the "Big Red" Marching Band has developed a winning and cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect great credit upon the individual members and their directors and bring honor to Kosciusko High School; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we commend and congratulate the Kosciusko High School "Big Red" Marching Band and their directors, Kevin Bishop, Sherry Dean, David Lance and Mickey Mangum for their outstanding performance in the 1999 Toyota Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Kosciusko High School "Big Red" Marching Band, and their directors Kevin Bishop, Sherry Dean, David Lance and Mickey Mangum.
